Chapter 14

Nadine

The day of my induction ceremony had arrived, and my nerves were in overdrive. I wasn’t sure whether to feel excited or anxious. It was definitely a mix of both.

I woke on Halloween to find three shadows standing above my bed. I startled, until my eyes adjusted to the light. I’d slept in late to prepare for a long night tonight, so it was already late morning. Talia, Amy, and Mandy smiled down at me. Isa stirred from where she slept at my feet.

“Goddess!” I gasped. “What are you guys doing?”

Talia bounced on her toes, and I noticed she held a small box wrapped in pink foil. “We couldn’t wait.”

“Wait for what?” I asked.

“Your presents!” Mandy cried in excitement.

I furrowed my brow. “It’s not my birthday.”

“But it’s your induction day,” Amy reminded me. “This is better than your birthday.”

My heart melted. “You guys didn’t have to.”

“But we did,” Talia stated with a smile. “Open mine first.”

My body ached as I shifted to prop myself up higher on my pillow. I’d made sure to take it easy over the last week so that I’d have the energy to make it through my priestess induction, but it still took some time to wake up.

I took the pink box from Talia and tore off the paper. Isa startled awake at the sound, but she relaxed when she spotted Gus and Stormy playing with a ball of yarn across the room. She yawned, then jumped off the bed to go play with them.

I opened the box and smiled. Inside sat six miniature muffins. “Barry’s Enchanted Muffins?” I asked.

Talia beamed. “Only your favorite.”

“You know me too well.” I unwrapped a chocolate chip muffin and popped it in my mouth. A serene calmness swept over me, and it felt as if I was melting into the bed. “It feels… good.”

“Relaxing, right?” Talia asked.

“Mm… I could sit here for hours,” I replied, enjoying the calmness. It lasted a minute before my body seemed to solidify again.

“Open mine next!” Mandy handed me a small box wrapped in black paper. I tore the paper off and opened the lid. Inside sat a crescent-shaped rainbow moonstone necklace.

My chest warmed. “You made this?”

She smiled proudly. “I sure did. I told you your tattoo was an inspiration. I thought you could wear it for your ceremony—unless you had something else in mind.”

“No, this is perfect,” I told her. “Thank you so much.”

“And finally…” Amy lifted a basket, showing it off from various angles. It hadn’t been wrapped, but it was filled with all types of pampering products, like bath bombs, Epsom salts, and lotion. “We thought you could use a nice long bath before your ceremony.”

Tears sprang to my eyes, and I pressed my hand to my mouth. The three of them looked between each other, but they had no idea how much this meant to me. Sometimes, all I wanted was for people to treat me like I was normal. I didn’t want people to think I was incapable because of my lupus.
